The Hat Family

As you may recall, I like to crochet. Well, long story short… after crafting my own flowery hat, then an Angry Birds hat for my eldest, and then a Poko hat for my youngest, it was time to make one for my husband. And what theme do you suppose he asked for, hmm? Lego? A Moose? Something Smarmy? Nope.

That’s right. R2D2.

I started out trying to find out exactly what R2D2 looked like 360degrees around, which was no easy task, let me tell you.

But I pieced together what I could and tried to simplify it a little bit, the end result being this…

Front.

Back.

Now, it’s not something I think he’ll be wearing every day to work or anything… but he seems to like it, especially for bumming around the house on a chilly day. Although, I think getting him in mittens is out of the question – besides, what on earth would they look like? ;)

Anyhow. The set is finally complete. Plus, now when we all go out for a weekend adventure, we’ll be sure to turn some heads. ;)

Water Play

So, as I may have mentioned a while back, I’ve been playing around with watercolours lately. Not necessarily “successfully”, mind you, but I blame that on the whole not-getting-to-complete-my-watercolour-class thing. ;) Anyhow, I did another page last night with my artsy-ladies group, and I figured it was about time to share. NOT because I think they’re any good <ahem>… but because I think there are some people out there who think I am successful at everything I try. Which is simply not true. And here’s proof.

“Let yourself be silently drawn by the stronger pull of that which you truly love”. – Rumi

“The window of my soul I throw wide open to the sun”. – John Greenleaf Whittier

“My darling girl… when are you going to understand that being ‘normal’ is hardly a virtue – it rather denotes a lack of courage”. – Alice Hoffman

“The wheel is come full circle”. – William Shakespeare

“It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves”. – William Shakespeare

It’s been fun to experiment with different techniques (wet-on-dry vs. wet-on-wet) and different tools (salt, masking fluid, gel pens). And there are areas on each of them that I like, which is good. But it’s insanely frustrating to see something in my mind’s eye and not be able to create it… yet. I guess that’s part of the whole “learning” thing though, isn’t it? *sigh* Well, okay then. Onwards and upwards.

Goats and Other Stories

Well, I’m glad that’s over. January, that is. It was an especially challenging month as my husband has been directing a kids show for Loose Moose Theatre, which has translated into much solo parenting, as well as days of costume/prop construction *and* some photo taking. Whew. But. The show opens this Saturday, so life is finally beginning to return to normal, thank goodness… just slowly.

Here are just a few of the goodies I’ve been helping with (when the kidlets have let me, that is…)

Sun and moon lanterns…

15 feet of background-hiding ocean (which still needs a piece)…

And three very differently-sized goat costumes.

Not to mention a few promotional photos, snapped with the children running wild behind the camera…

So, yeah. I’m a little tuckered out right now. But. The house kind of exploded (thanks to the Monkeyboys) whilst all this was going on, so I think before I take a day to relax, I’d better restock the fridge and get some laundry/dishes/toy tidying done. There will be time on the weekend for lounging. Hope y’all have a great one!

Oh, and if you’re in the Calgary area, be sure to check out the show!

Birthdays Galore

It’s been a busy week or so, with Monkeyboy Jr. turning 8 (!) and Monkeyboy Junior Jr. turning 3 (!!). A week of laser tag and pizza and balloons and Rice Krispie cake and new toys and sushi and birthday cards and parties and… well, you get the idea. In between all of that, I’ve been trying to get some costumes and props made for the upcoming Loose Moose Theatre for Kids show that my husband is directing. And doing battle with a serious sinus infection. Oy. I’ll be glad when January is over.

Anyhow. We didn’t want to go overboard with toys and such this year – the eldest would get plenty from his friends at his party, and the youngest has already inherited a ton of them from his big brother – not to mention that Christmas wasn’t even a month ago… So. The eldest got a Lego set and a Wii game, and the youngest got a Fisher Price Batman set and clothes. But not just regular clothes. I decided to make Monkeyboy Junior Jr. a couple of shirts that I knew he’d absolutely adore. He’s a fan of both “Angry Birds” and “Max & Ruby” right now, so I did a Google image search for both of these things.

I found this image for an American Apparel t-shirt…

… which, after some editing and printing onto a decal, became this…

He was so excited that he had to change shirts immediately! Until he opened the next one, that is. ;)

I had also found this image for Angry Birds cupcake toppers at…

… which again, got edited and turned into this…

… which in turn, got turned into this…

He was so excited by *this* shirt that he didn’t even bother to take the dragon shirt off before he put the Angry Birds one on! His older brother was also so enamoured by the shirt that I had to make him one too. Then, of course, I had a hard time getting them both to take the shirts off at bedtime! Silly boys. ;)

There was a little bit of plain white decal left over from these shirts and I used it to modify a tee that I found at Wal-Mart? Target? (something like that) over the Christmas holidays when we were in California-Arizona.

It’s a VERY subtle Scott Pilgrim reference, and should have read “BOB-OMB”, but “BO-BOMB” just didn’t look or sound right…

Anyhow. I’ve got an ocean to sew (quite literally), and some goats to construct, so I’d best be off. Hope y’all have a great weekend!

Sleeping Beauty

Okay. Here’s a quick and dirty post with some promotional photos I took a while ago for Loose Moose Theatre for Kid’s production of Sleeping Beauty. I finally got around to editing them this weekend. Whew. All I can say is that it’s great working with people who “get” being expressive for the camera. ;)

In other news, I was toying with the idea of trying to create something new every day for the month of November, a.k.a. AEDM (Art Every Day Month) – kind of like a visual version of Nanowrimo, as I don’t consider myself much of a writer… But. Life (as usual, at this point) kinda got in the way. However, I have been knitting a little each day, and as soon as I got a few free hours to myself, I dug out my watercolours and played around with them. I also discovered that I really have no idea how to successfully use watercolours. ;) It must have something to do with the fact that I only got to attend one session of the class I was taking… before my water broke and Monkeyboy Junior Jr. arrived six weeks early. But that’s what learning is all about, isn’t it? So, I suppose that when I get some time this month, I am going to work on my watercolour technique – I’m thinking each page will have a favourite quote of mine and then some imagery relating to it. Lalala. Okay, then. Back to life. So, anybody else participating in a creative November?

Embroidery Love

So, this fall I rounded up some of my artsy-craftsy friends and had them over for a night of playing. There was painting and stitching and much wine drinking (on my part, at least). And we all had so much fun that we decided to make it a monthly event. We even came up with a name for ourselves – although I’m not at liberty to print it here (it’s a little too naughty for public consumption…) ;) Anyhow. We got together a couple of nights ago and this time I stayed sober and managed to create something worth sharing…

I’ve got to say, I’m really enjoying working with embroidery floss! I figure I’ll keep things easy for now – with felt ornaments like these – and work my way up to more intricate fabric arts. I also have plans to start embellishing some clothing… when I get some time, that is. Anyhow. Just thought I’d share. =)

FML

Not that I’m not grateful for my life – I totally am – but there are some days when I’ve really got to question my luck… Fighting off yet another cold? Oh, goody. *le sigh* For these times (and the many eye-roll-inducing others), here’s another mini-sampler I threw together.

Frick my luck, indeed. <ahem> Feel free to use more forceful words at your convenience. ;)

AWOL

Sorry about just disappearing like that. Things got a little… er, busy, around here. Let’s just say that solo parenting combined with a baby with a cold & reflux issues does not make for a lot of free time. Especially when every time you try to get on the computer, the snot-producing littlest one gets right in front of the screen and tries to Skype his Da. Stickily <eww>. I think I was fighting off the bug too – I was just soooo tired ALL the time! But. Hubby is back. Things are slowly getting back into a routine. I figured it was about time to share a little of what I’ve been up to.

Monkeyboy Junior Jr. and I logged some serious hours bundled up in front of the TV last week (I’ve seen more Peppa Pig than any one woman should!). During that time, however, I’d try to sneak in a few stitches on the Daisychain Sampler I started a couple of weeks ago. This is what Alica (the designer) Paulson’s looks like…

But. (1) I found that I didn’t I didn’t have the same colours of floss that Alicia suggested – and I really didn’t want to go out just to hunt them down, (2) I also wanted to do mine on natural linen backing – which I already had handy… and (3) then my friend Jasmine loaned me a great book about embroidery stitches, some of which I just had to try. The end result is that my sampler ended up looking a little bit different than it was “supposed to”…

Overall, I’m pretty happy with it – and very glad I did it “my way”, as it’s much more “me” as a result. I wish I had known a few things before I started, though. Like “Don’t start on letter A, as it is the first thing people will look at, but as it’s also the first thing you’ve embroidered since you were, say, 8 years old, it’s going to be your worst letter…” And “If you’re going to stray from the original pattern, you should test things out on a scrap of fabric before you commit to them, or you’re going to have to rip out a lot of stitches. And those chain stitches are the worst!” But, hey. Live and learn.

Next, I have to frame the darn thing – which will require washing, blocking, and lacing it onto a piece of cardboard or something. I thought I’d better practice this on something a little smaller – I’d hate to ruin all that work if I messed up. So, I took a scrap of fabric, downloaded some fun fonts, and whipped up some “Naughty Stitches” – which I then practiced the framing with.

Looking good, don’t you think? Plus, I think I’m ready to frame the 11″ x 14″ one now… Next up, a mini -  “FML” piece. ;) I know it seems a little bit of an “old lady” form of creativity (naughty acronyms aside), but I find it to actually be ridiculously relaxing, and a great thing to do while keeping one eye on the kidlets. Easily transportable, too.

So, yeah. That’s been most of my “creating” this last couple of weeks. Aside from some photo taking for Loose Moose and the Kids Theatre production of Sleeping Beauty, and putting together a frame of photos from last year for their homecoming event… But posting about those will have to wait for another day. Monkeyboy Junior Jr. and his Duplo are calling. Hope y’all have a great weekend!

More Surprising Myself

Okay. So. Manymanymany moons ago, I purchased Kelly Rae Roberts book “Taking Flight: Inspiration & Techniques to Give Your Creative Spirit Wings”. I even did a post about my experience with the book and the whole “standing on the shoulder of giants” thing. In that post, I promised that when I finally did finish my collage, I’d share it with you. Well, guess what? Today is that lucky day! Woohoo!!!

As luck would have it, my “domestic assistant” came over today. For whatever reason, the kids were driving me crazy, so I packed them all up in the car, gave them some money, and sent them to the mall for a few hours. It was so peaceful, so quiet… and so necessary for my sanity! As I was enjoying my quiet cup of chai, I realized that I had no desire to work on anything today. Yes, a bunch of things needed to get done (they always do), but today I really needed to just play.

I decided to do something creative. Not just anything, mind you – something I wouldn’t normally allow myself the time to do. And there it was – my collage. It’s been half-finished and collecting dust on my shelves for a very long time. Filled with patterned papers that I adore and gentle reminders for how I want to live, but only half-finished nonetheless.

Alrighty, then. First, I needed to tidy up the kitchen table so I’d have somewhere to work. Then, I had to dig out all of the supplies I might need from my disaster of an office. And after I had procrastinated by cutting some fresh flowers, finding some good music, checking in on Facebook… I forced myself to just START.

You have to understand, starting the painting part of the collage was the hardest part for me. Not only have I not done any serious painting in, well… years… but I have this little negative voice inside myself that says “your painting is SO naive” – and not in the charming kind of way. But I did my best to ignore that little voice, familiarized myself with Kelly Rae’s techniques again, and got to work.

Long story short, after several attempts – twice for using the brayer to apply paint, three times for adding the shading, and I-lost-track-of-how-many-times for the face – and my girlie was finally done.

At least I think she’s done. I am still trying to decide if I want to add wings to her or not, as well as some black tape around the edges of the frame to “finish it” a bit more. But there she is. Done for now. She’s hardly perfect – the zoologist/scientist in me says “she’s not at all symmetrical… her neck is weird… and where exactly are her shoulders?” And I don’t really like that the collaged paper edges show so much. But the artsy-fartsy in me says “Woohoo!!! Look at what you can do! Way to go, girlie!”

And I think for now, that’s the voice I wanna listen to. ;)

Is That A Rock Cozy?

As you may well remember, I relatively recently rediscovered my love of crochet – remember the Angry Birds Hat? Flower Power? Poko? Although, while making these projects, I also rediscovered that I was lacking some important knowledge – that being, what the names of stitches actually were, how to read a pattern, how to follow a pattern, etc. And so. When I came across this book in Michael’s (craft store) a few months back, I knew I just had to pick it up.

Beyond The Square: Crochet Motifs by the talented Edie Eckman. You can visit her at edieeckman.com.

It’s wonderful!!! Lots of big, shiny photos. A glossary of names and terms. Instructions in both visual and textual forms. PERFECTION! I can’t recommend it highly enough. Anyhow. I slowly worked my way through the “Workshop” section, familiarizing myself with the “how to’s” of crochet, and then I tackled some of the motifs I liked using some cotton yarn ends I just had kicking around.

Woohoo! Look at me go! In no time at all (okay-okay, the actual time between purchasing the book, reading the book, and practicing my skills was actually several weeks in length, but overall it wasn’t so long) I became comfortable with my new skills and felt ready to tackle something new. Namely, this.

Behold the gorgeous creations of Margaret Oomen, a rural physician and textile artist from Ontario that I happened to discover via one of my “inspirational” links. You can find her work (both the crochetted stones and the photographs she takes of them) in her Etsy store, knitalatte. I totally fell in love with the multicoloured crochetted stone, but just couldn’t bring myself to spend $150 on it. So, I took it as a kind of challenge instead.

I went out and got some thin crochet thread and a teeny hook and tried a new motif. It ended up being a lot bulkier and larger than I had anticipated. Hmm. Well, maybe I should try to separate some strands of embroidery floss and use only a few of them instead? So I gave that a try (I’ll put up a whole post on how to do that tomorrow, for all those DIY-ers out there…) and this is what it looked like.

As you can see, it was finer – lacier even – and I was pretty satisfied. Next, I tried using some different colours in the motif. (I still can’t believe how tiny the work is! If I keep up with it, I may need to get glasses again…)

When I was done, I went out and found a nice rock in the alley, stitched the two pieces together, and voila – my version of the “rock cozy” was done.

Front…

And back.

Just for fun, I grabbed a couple of my beach treasures and made a quick-and-dirty collective…

Not too shabby, huh? Maybe when I have more time, I’ll do some more experimenting – and put a little more effort into my photography… but for now, I’m pretty happy with my new windowsill decoration. Maragret’s stone that I really like has pieces of embroidered cloth stitched in, which will be yet another challenge, but I’m sure I’ll figure out something. Yay, me! Sometimes, I surprise even myself. =)

P.S. I Googled “crochet rock covers” and found this tutorial in case you’d like to try to make one for yourself. Yippie! I love the interwebs.
