I’m Still Here

December 12th, 2011

Busybusybusy. And MORE busy. But yes, I am still here. The Christmas season is always ridiculously full, even when I’m not participating in any craft fairs it seems. So, in lieu of a bunch of posts about all the hubbub, here are a few snaps from my gratitude journal – after all, I still have waaay too much to do to be hanging out here ;) .

There has been MUCH long-overdue basement, bedroom, and living space culling and organizing recently…

(I’m hoping to do a whole post about Monkeyboy Junior’s new bedroom when I get a bit more time… it’s pretty cool!)

Traditional Christmas preparations, like decorating, creating a family photo, and sending out cards…

[As an interesting side note, our family photo from a few years back appears to have gone viral and made it onto some "Awesome" and "Worst" Christmas Photos lists... Weird! I am also hoping to do a post about this year's versions when I get a few minutes...]

Festive treats like hot apple cider, gingerbread cookies, and advent calendars (which take the form of LEGO around here)…

Crafts with the kids (Shrinky Dinks!!!) …

Visits with Santa…

And getting together with dear friends…

And on top of all of that, there’s the whole shopping thing…

And the creation of various gifts for people, which of course, can’t yet be revealed. WHEW! So, yeah. Things around here have been busy

At any rate, I hope that things are going well for y’all, and that the season is “merry and bright” for you. On the off chance that I don’t have time to get back here before the “big day”, Merry Christmas to you and yours! =)

Pine Lake – Part II

November 15th, 2011

Okay. So Part II was supposed to be about how by some weird twist of fate, 30ish years later, I ended up going back to Pine Lake Christian Camp. This time, with Monkeyboy Junior and his Beaver group. And this time, with much better results…

It was going to be a post about making peace with a piece of one’s past…

About seeing things with new eyes and understanding things in a new way…

And about the joys of reconnecting with my son and the adventures we had together that weekend…

But.

By another weird twist of fate, I received a message a week or so after the camp “confirming the passing” of the son of one of the mothers I had met there. I’m not sure of the details of his death, but he’s gone. And even though I never even met the boy, it’s been weighing heavily on me ever since.

Perhaps it’s because I am remembering all of the loved ones I’ve lost already (I am truly awful with goodbyes). Or maybe it’s because I am imagining how utterly devastating it would be to be in her shoes. With my boys. I can’t… even… *heavy sigh* Probably, it’s a bit of both.

At any rate, I have spent the last week or so trying to figure out whether or not I should reach out to this virtual stranger, not wanting to intrude on a very personal and painful experience, but also wanting to help in some way if I possibly can. And this post… well… while I can remember that we had a joyful and positive and wonderful time at camp, I am having a hard time feeling that right now, and thus, a hard time writing about it as well.

In the end, I decided to prepare some meals and a box of other assorted dry goods and produce for the family. When our youngest was born and spent the first few weeks in the N.I.C.U., some moms from Monkeyboy Junior’s preschool did the same for us. And in some small way, it really did help. I have included a note offering to help out in any way I can (if she’ll let me), and just wanting to let her know that there is at least one more person in the world that is holding their family in her heart. I am going to drop it off tonight. And if there should happen to be a next time that something like this happens, I won’t waiver for a second about “paying it forward”.

Aladdin

November 11th, 2011

Feeling a bit under the weather… again… so the “Pine Lake – Part II” post will have to wait. For today, I leave you with some Loose Moose Theatre for Kids photos for their upcoming performance of Aladdin. I took some promotional shots last night during their dress rehearsal, and although some of the props and stuff have yet to be finished, I think you get a pretty good idea of the show – especially when I play around in PSE9 a bit. A gravy boat never looked so good. ;)

Break legs, guys! And if you’re in the area, why not pop by and see the show?

Pine Lake – Part I

November 9th, 2011

Nearly 30 years ago <ahem>, I had just begun Jr. High. Going to a whole new school was both scary and exciting, but I soon made two new friends – Carolyn and Michelle – so exciting won out. After a school year of paling around together, sharing secrets on the bus, goofing around at dances and birthdays, and giggling all night at slumber parties, they each invited me to go to summer camp with them – two different camps. I had never been to a sleep away camp before and was eager to give it a try. Especially with my new best buds.

The only thing was – they both were Christian summer camps, and my mother was extremely anti-organized-religion. (I remember my grandmother being horrified at my complete lack of knowledge about the “true meaning” behind Easter that year. But I digress.) I think my single-mother liked the idea of having a couple of weeks to herself more than she was willing to hang on to her prejudices, so she eventually relented and agreed to let me go. The religion thing hadn’t been an “issue” thus far, and it was still summer camp after all…

The first camp was with Carolyn. I can’t even remember the name of it any more, but I remember it was pretty generic. There were crafts, sports, games, camp fires, silly songs in the cafeteria, and late night whispers in bunk beds – just like you’d expect. The only thing remotely religious about the camp was maybe the “God’s eye” craft, and that every day there would be a scheduled half-hour session to attend, where they would discuss various topics. Like “Creation vs. Evolution – Can Both Be Right?”  Like “Who Was Jesus, Anyhow?”  Like “Old vs. New Testament – What’s The Difference?” But they were very open-minded discussions, very progressive if you will. I got home at the end of the week in a great mood and excited for the next camp.

Little did I know that Michelle’s camp – Pine Lake – would be a little… different. Yes, there were all the traditional camp classics: archery, hot dogs, and swimming – oh, my! But. There was also praying. And some not-at-all-“progressive” talks. And… Bible memorization. You were to pick some scripture from the given list, memorize it, recite it to your group leader, and then they would discuss it with you. You were expected to get through the whole list by the end of the camp (there were a couple of pages if I recall). And, yeah. For somebody who had never even touched a Bible before, it was a little, er… overwhelming. I remember doing a lot of shoulder shrugging and mumbling whenever my turn came around.

And then. At the last campfire, everyone was invited to stand up and share their accepting of Jesus as their savior. No, you didn’t have to, but wow, the pressure to was intense. I remember wanting soooo much to be accepted. Plus, here was a big group of people who all believed the same thing so strongly, I had a hard time figuring how could they be wrong. But. I also couldn’t believe that everyone I loved – who weren’t Christian, but who were good people – would burn in Hell for not believing in God the way these people did. I remember sitting there struggling, staring at the fire with tears burning my eyes. I never did stand up.

When I got home from camp I was sullen and withdrawn. I tried reading some of the book I had been given at camp (“If God Loves Me, Why Can’t I Get My Locker Open?”), but it didn’t help much. After a couple of days, my mom had had more than enough and demanded to know what exactly had happened at camp. In a flurry of tears, I told her of my struggle… and she laughed in relief. “Oh, is that all?” She then proceeded to point out that a multitude of religions exist in the world, and she suggested that before I spent too much time deciding whether or not I should become a card-carrying Christian, that perhaps I should check them out as well. This made a lot of sense to me, and over the years, it’s exactly what I’ve done. It was probably one of the few good pieces of advice she’s ever given me. But again, I digress. ;)

Odds ‘n’ Ends

November 8th, 2011

Just a few that didn’t really “fit” anywhere else, but that I did for my gratitude journal and really like. =)

Monkeyboy Jr. gets a much-needed haircut at a real barber.

Part of an old bike we found in a junk heap at Pine Lake.

The city’s “pumpkin recycle” pile.

Sleeping Beauty

November 7th, 2011

Okay. Here’s a quick and dirty post with some promotional photos I took a while ago for Loose Moose Theatre for Kid’s production of Sleeping Beauty. I finally got around to editing them this weekend. Whew. All I can say is that it’s great working with people who “get” being expressive for the camera. ;)

In other news, I was toying with the idea of trying to create something new every day for the month of November, a.k.a. AEDM (Art Every Day Month) – kind of like a visual version of Nanowrimo, as I don’t consider myself much of a writer… But. Life (as usual, at this point) kinda got in the way. However, I have been knitting a little each day, and as soon as I got a few free hours to myself, I dug out my watercolours and played around with them. I also discovered that I really have no idea how to successfully use watercolours. ;) It must have something to do with the fact that I only got to attend one session of the class I was taking… before my water broke and Monkeyboy Junior Jr. arrived six weeks early. But that’s what learning is all about, isn’t it? So, I suppose that when I get some time this month, I am going to work on my watercolour technique – I’m thinking each page will have a favourite quote of mine and then some imagery relating to it. Lalala. Okay, then. Back to life. So, anybody else participating in a creative November?

Catching Up

November 2nd, 2011

So many photos to go through, so little time… Today, for example, I spent trying to catch up in the garden – taking the last of the produce in before the snow flies, doing some last ditch weeding, and putting all the assorted toys, planters, furniture, water features, bikes, etc. away. I managed to snap a few pics, so rather than go through the hundreds I took at Monkeyboy Junior’s sleep away camp with Beavers, or the backlog of other shots I’ve got, here are a few from today. Whew. I think I’m going to need a long, hot bath after this one.

Trimming back the rose bushes.

Bringing in the statuary.

Harvesting the leeks – I love how they look tropical almost.

Rounding up the sunflower seeds for the birds (or more likely mice).

Treasure hunting for potatoes. Yummy.

I always forget just how much work it is to get things ready for the winter. In the spring, you do things a little at a time – take out the cushions one day, plant some hanging baskets the next, get the fountain running on another. Nice and slow. But by the time September/October hits, I have usually completely forgotten about my garden – until I realize that the snow is coming and things had better get done – and fast! It’s a relief to finally have it all cozy and ready for winter, and now I can turn my attention to indoor projects once more – guilt free. Well, I hope you enjoyed your time outside this spring/summer/fall as much as I did. Now, bring on the cocoa!

Jeepers – Creepers!

October 28th, 2011

Ah, Hallowe’en. The time of the year when I get to have a little fun with costumes. This year Monkeyboy Junior decided he wanted to go as a “creeper” from the game “Minecraft”. Um… okay? I have never actually played the game, but was informed that they look a little something like this…

Except maybe without the top hat. Oh, and that they hisssss. Hmm…

Well, we found an army costume at the Walmart that the boys thought would work for the body, and then we got around to constructing a head this week. First, I used my design program to cut and paste a bunch of greenish boxes together at random. I tried to match the army costume colours instead of the game colours, though I am informed that this makes it look like he’s made of gravel (whatever THAT means…)

Then we found a box that fit his head, cut out the face, and then started taping the pages we’d made onto it using scrapbooking squares and Scotch tape.

He seemed to really enjoy those sticky squares for some reason. o.O

When it was done, he was really pleased with how it turned out.

I stuffed some quilt batting into the corners so that the box would stay centered on his head, and voila – a hissing creeper.

His buddies at the dance last night seemed to really enjoy the costume too (woohoo!!!), although I have no proof of this as my stuffy head prevented me from remembering to take a memory card for the camera. *le sigh* I hate it when that happens!

Meanwhile, Monkeyboy Junior Jr. was apparently designing his own Hallowe’en costume…

Though, I’m still not too clear on what he’s supposed to be. ;)

Well, we’re off for a sleep away camp for Beavers this weekend, so there will be no more costume fun for us until Monday. Hope you all have a safe and fun Hallowe’en weekend! BOO!

Action

October 27th, 2011

A few of days ago, The Charm Lady (Lori) posted the following quote on her Facebook page…

The universe likes speed. Don’t delay. Don’t second guess. Don’t doubt. When the opportunity is there, when the impulse is there, when the intuitive nudge from within is there, act. That’s your job. And that’s all you have to do. ~ Dr. Joe Vitale

It got me thinking about how often I ignore those impulses. How often I’m on my way somewhere else, or in the middle of doing something else, and don’t feel like I can act on my “intuitive nudges”. So on Monday, as I was driving Monkeyboy Junior Jr. to his dayhome, I was awestruck by the autumn colours. I didn’t have my camera with me, and I was (am) fighting off yet another germ invasion. (One thing chronic sleep deprivation does is thoroughly trounce on your immune system…) But. I didn’t have anything pressing that I needed to be doing, or anywhere I absolutely needed to BE. So. I went home, grabbed my camera, and went back out to take some snaps. Of course, I couldn’t get to editing/posting them until today, thanks to those lovely germs… But, hey. That’s life.

Well, that felt good. Yeah, it’s a small action. But it’s a start. ;)

Monday Mosaic: October 21 – 23

October 24th, 2011

After a Friday of Monkeyboy Junior Jr. whining, he finally collapsed in front of the computer…

… and we snuck out for date night.

Which consisted of Mongolian grill…

… and quiet shopping. At Costco (for my hubby), and Michael’s (for me), and Chapter’s (for us both). Now, here’s an odd little something I found in my puttering.

Vampire Knits?!?! Um… okay…

I spent Saturday morning knitting (in a very non-vampire way, I might add) and trying to relax… because I spent the afternoon getting prepared for my first crown.

While watching The Wolf Man (1941) was somewhat distracting during the procedure, two days later and I still feel like I got punched in the face. Hard. Blech.

But I came home to find this, and that made it a little better.

His wee hands look so much like my own…

That night, my husband went off to do a show and I hung out with the boys. They were pretty darn cute playing and reading just before bed.

On Sunday, I woke up grumpy. I pretty much kept to myself for the morning, and was grateful that the boys decided to put up the Halloween decorations without me. That put me in a better mood.

That afternoon, Daddy took Monkeyboy Junior out on a “boys date” to see some movie about boxing robots and have dinner. Monkeyboy Junior Jr. and I puttered in the back yard.

I decided to harvest a few more veggies – beets, chard, and carrots this time.

Though the carrots, as you can see, were a little disappointing. I’m still not sure whether it was the weather, aphids, or just the different variety of seeds I got this year. *le sigh*

I tried to cheer myself up with the last of the lavender…

… and apologized for disrupting all the poor little ladybugs hiding in the leaves.

Then the littlest and I shared some Vietnamese bun for dinner and called it a night. Put it all together, and it looks kind of like this…

Hope your weekend was more enjoyable than a crown at the dentist! ;)
