Goats and Other Stories

Well, I’m glad that’s over. January, that is. It was an especially challenging month as my husband has been directing a kids show for Loose Moose Theatre, which has translated into much solo parenting, as well as days of costume/prop construction *and* some photo taking. Whew. But. The show opens this Saturday, so life is finally beginning to return to normal, thank goodness… just slowly.

Here are just a few of the goodies I’ve been helping with (when the kidlets have let me, that is…)

Sun and moon lanterns…

15 feet of background-hiding ocean (which still needs a piece)…

And three very differently-sized goat costumes.

Not to mention a few promotional photos, snapped with the children running wild behind the camera…

So, yeah. I’m a little tuckered out right now. But. The house kind of exploded (thanks to the Monkeyboys) whilst all this was going on, so I think before I take a day to relax, I’d better restock the fridge and get some laundry/dishes/toy tidying done. There will be time on the weekend for lounging. Hope y’all have a great one!

Oh, and if you’re in the Calgary area, be sure to check out the show!

Birthdays Galore

It’s been a busy week or so, with Monkeyboy Jr. turning 8 (!) and Monkeyboy Junior Jr. turning 3 (!!). A week of laser tag and pizza and balloons and Rice Krispie cake and new toys and sushi and birthday cards and parties and… well, you get the idea. In between all of that, I’ve been trying to get some costumes and props made for the upcoming Loose Moose Theatre for Kids show that my husband is directing. And doing battle with a serious sinus infection. Oy. I’ll be glad when January is over.

Anyhow. We didn’t want to go overboard with toys and such this year – the eldest would get plenty from his friends at his party, and the youngest has already inherited a ton of them from his big brother – not to mention that Christmas wasn’t even a month ago… So. The eldest got a Lego set and a Wii game, and the youngest got a Fisher Price Batman set and clothes. But not just regular clothes. I decided to make Monkeyboy Junior Jr. a couple of shirts that I knew he’d absolutely adore. He’s a fan of both “Angry Birds” and “Max & Ruby” right now, so I did a Google image search for both of these things.

I found this image for an American Apparel t-shirt…

… which, after some editing and printing onto a decal, became this…

He was so excited that he had to change shirts immediately! Until he opened the next one, that is. ;)

I had also found this image for Angry Birds cupcake toppers at…

… which again, got edited and turned into this…

… which in turn, got turned into this…

He was so excited by *this* shirt that he didn’t even bother to take the dragon shirt off before he put the Angry Birds one on! His older brother was also so enamoured by the shirt that I had to make him one too. Then, of course, I had a hard time getting them both to take the shirts off at bedtime! Silly boys. ;)

There was a little bit of plain white decal left over from these shirts and I used it to modify a tee that I found at Wal-Mart? Target? (something like that) over the Christmas holidays when we were in California-Arizona.

It’s a VERY subtle Scott Pilgrim reference, and should have read “BOB-OMB”, but “BO-BOMB” just didn’t look or sound right…

Anyhow. I’ve got an ocean to sew (quite literally), and some goats to construct, so I’d best be off. Hope y’all have a great weekend!

Aladdin

Feeling a bit under the weather… again… so the “Pine Lake – Part II” post will have to wait. For today, I leave you with some Loose Moose Theatre for Kids photos for their upcoming performance of Aladdin. I took some promotional shots last night during their dress rehearsal, and although some of the props and stuff have yet to be finished, I think you get a pretty good idea of the show – especially when I play around in PSE9 a bit. A gravy boat never looked so good. ;)

Break legs, guys! And if you’re in the area, why not pop by and see the show?

Sleeping Beauty

Okay. Here’s a quick and dirty post with some promotional photos I took a while ago for Loose Moose Theatre for Kid’s production of Sleeping Beauty. I finally got around to editing them this weekend. Whew. All I can say is that it’s great working with people who “get” being expressive for the camera. ;)

In other news, I was toying with the idea of trying to create something new every day for the month of November, a.k.a. AEDM (Art Every Day Month) – kind of like a visual version of Nanowrimo, as I don’t consider myself much of a writer… But. Life (as usual, at this point) kinda got in the way. However, I have been knitting a little each day, and as soon as I got a few free hours to myself, I dug out my watercolours and played around with them. I also discovered that I really have no idea how to successfully use watercolours. ;) It must have something to do with the fact that I only got to attend one session of the class I was taking… before my water broke and Monkeyboy Junior Jr. arrived six weeks early. But that’s what learning is all about, isn’t it? So, I suppose that when I get some time this month, I am going to work on my watercolour technique – I’m thinking each page will have a favourite quote of mine and then some imagery relating to it. Lalala. Okay, then. Back to life. So, anybody else participating in a creative November?

Hansel And Gretel

It’s that time again. Time for Loose Moose Theatre to put on another kids show, and time for me to take some photos of that show. In this case, the show in question is their uniquely quirky version of the classic Hansel and Gretel, and this go round it is being directed by none other than my very own husband. Woohoo, go David! The show goes up tomorrow afternoon, and let’s just say… there’s still some work to be done. When I was trying decide which photo to use for promotional purposes, the obvious choice was to pick one in front of the witch’s candy/gingerbread house. But. The house wasn’t quite done yet. What to do, what to do?

Why, edit it of course! A little playing around with the candy that was done (plus a big sucker I found online) in Microsoft Picture It! and we were all set to go.

The images look a but blurry when I shrink them down this small, but you get the general idea. It’s amazing what a little “cut and paste” can do, isn’t it? Well, that’s how I spent my morning. I hope you have yourselves a great weekend! And if you’re in the Calgary area, don’t forget to come check out the show at Loose Moose Theatre – 1pm, Saturdays and Sundays for the entire month of February. =)

Theatre For Kids Frame

I spent this afternoon napping with the baby, so just a quick post for today. After dinner I did a little photographic catch-up for the theatre by assembling a frame featuring last season’s kids shows (amidst squalling children and short tempers, I might add). Not terribly exciting, but I’m sure a couple of the performers will be pleased to finally make it onto “the wall”…

To Photoshop, Or Not To Photoshop

Last week I took some photos for The Elves And The Shoemaker kids show currently playing at Loose Moose Theatre in Calgary. When I finally got around to editing the photos, it became clear that I was once again facing a typical “multi-subject” photography problem – that is, you have a photo where everybody’s perfect… except for that one person. That one individual is either looking away or has a goofy expression on or has their eyes closed or whatever. *sigh* I hate it when that happens!

This time, however, instead of just deleting these photos, I thought I’d try my hand at “photoshopping” them… except that I don’t actually have Photoshop per se. I’ve been using “Microsoft Picture It!” for years, as it was free (thanks to a kind donation by our friend Jason) and up until now, it has done everything I’ve needed it to do. Lately though, I’ve been wanting to try my hand at stuff like adding textures to photos (i.e. multiple layering of digital images), and I can’t seem to find any tutorials on how to do this sort of thing with the program I am currently using. My friend Keith also showed me how he could easily adjust for my camera’s barrel effect using Lightroom, and I am even more convinced I need to upgrade soon if I want to further my photographic studies. But I digress. Elves. Editing. Faces. Go.

So, for example, here is one of the photos I took for the show. In this case I love the expressions on Mr. and Mrs. Shoemaker, but I clearly caught the elves at a, um, less than flattering moment.

And here is the second (and last I took of this scene) photo, where the elves are fine, but not so much the Shoemakers (nothing personal, Djoeke).

Now, looking at these little square versions (I cropped the originals to get better detailĀ  here for the blog), it occurs to me that I could have just cut the image in half almost-horizontally and just combined the two. Ah, hindsight… Instead, I painstakingly deleted the elf faces from the first image, then copied them from the second, pasting them back into the first photo. I then blended all the surrounding details to make it all fit properly. It was a bit of work, but totally worth it.

Here is the work in progress.

And here is the finished product.

Not too shabby, but I’m sure I could do it with a little more finesse if I spent the time learning my current program a bit better. Or if I saved my pennies and upgraded. Anyhow. Just thought I’d share a little behind the scenes magic with y’all on this cold and snowy Friday. Hope you have a great weekend. And if you’re in the Calgary area, please come on down and check out the show!

Oh! And if you’re on Facebook and would like to see the rest of the photos, head over to the fanpage and check it out!
