The California-Arizona Christmas – Part III

With Christmas temporarily done with (we had decided to give the majority of our gifts at a post-trip celebration back home), we got back to the serious business of vacationing.

The remainder of our trip is a haze of swimming…

… playing (as here, with the cousins)…

… and hanging out.

Followed by more swimming…

… more playing (at Crackerjax)…

… and more hanging out. ;)

In the midst of all that, there were a couple of dinners with my husband’s family – including one at this quirky little place called Organ Stop Pizza. Yes, that entire back wall IS for the giant Wurlitzer theatre organ. Yes, those are dancing cat marionettes above it. And yes, I apparently do know all the words to several show tunes and “old time” classics. <ahem> Q.U.I.R.K.Y.

This was followed, of course, by more swimming…

… more playing (also at Crackerjax)…

… and yes, more hanging out. ;)

Oh, and some window shopping…

… and lots of yummy eating…

… and random picture taking. =)

Then the time came for us to pack up and head home once more. Home to our own beds, Santa stockings and gifts, and everyday living. Thanks, California & Arizona & family & friends – you were a blast!

The California-Arizona Christmas – Part II

So. After spending Christmas eve day doing a little “elfing”, we got cleaned up and headed north to see my sister and her family in Scottsdale. Long story short, “Wiki” (as Monkeyboy Junior Jr. has decided to dub her) is my half-sister, and this was the first time we were meeting her mom…

The house was absolutely dreamy, and we felt so warmly welcomed.

We enjoyed pre-dinner appies, colouring, and Amaretto Sours…

… and the “kids” did a little cookie decorating in the kitchen. Monkeyboy Jr. is seen here with Wiki’s other half-sister, who we’ve decided to nickname “Niki”.

We then sat down for the most delicious, sisters-made, organic turkey dinner ever! (I still dream about it. ;) )

After dinner (and some more scrumptious Amaretto Sours), we exchanged and played with a few gifts…

… like these silly little moustaches, a dragon pillow, a voice-altering megaphone, a pirate towel, a super-sticky frog…

… and punchy balloons (go, Wiki, go!) =)

Then, after a quick reading of ” ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas”…

… there was just time for a few last photos before heading back…

… to get some sleep so that Santa could come.

Did someone say SANTA!?!?!

<insert several blurry photos of the boys tearing into gifts here>

Like this one…

… and this one. ;)

Though, I did convince them to stand still for a moment or two…

… to model their new clothes…

… before they dove into the LEGO.

The California-Arizona Christmas – Part I

Just got finished editing some of my photos from our trip over the holidays for my gratitude journal. You know, it’s hard enough sticking to one shot a day for the journal most of the time, but it’s impossible to do so when there is a trip involved! Luckily, I left the “Periodic Table”, “Map of Canada”, and “Contact Information” sheets at the back of the journal, so I now have a few pages for special photos. Here are a few of my faves from the trip. ;)

This is what I woke up to on our first day. 70F and sun at La Quinta Resort in Palm Springs.

The resort is divided into several segments, each with a pool and hot tub surrounded by various gorgeous accommodations.

It was all blue doors, whitewashed walls, Mexican ceramic tiles, terracotta roofs, cactus and palm trees, and pink begonias. Ahh…

The resort was also quite beautifully decorated for the holidays, with tons of twinkle lights, ribbons…

… and several ornamented Christmas trees.

Yes. It was most magical. =)

While we were staying in Palm Springs, we ventured out to various “sights” nearby…

Like the Living Desert (for me, mostly)…

Like Boomers (for the Monkeyboys, mostly)…

And of course, like Legoland (for my husband, mostly I think, though he swears it was for our eldest) ;)

We also did a little bit of shopping, and found Monkeyboy Junior Jr. the cutest little dragon hoodie ever!

(Now he is even more ridiculously cute when he wears it with his dragon boots – double “rawr!”)

And even though it wasn’t a “white Christmas” per se, everything was still so festively decorated that it wasn’t hard to get caught up in the holiday spirit.

Aww…

After a few days in Palm Springs, it was time to head toward family visits in Arizona.

With only a few minor hiccups (or episodes of acid reflux, rather), the boys did amazingly well with the long desert drives.

Thanks to various hand-held video games (whatever did *we* do as kids when we went on roadtrips?!)

I especially loved driving at night – with either the sunset creating the most magnificent silhouettes, or the stars shining ever so brightly away from all of the city lights.

We spent the night mid-way in a quaint little place called Blythe…

… and then were on the road again!

Only to arrive at the in-laws trailer at the Mesa Regal RV park, which was also festively decorated – as we saw by golfcart later that night…

Cali2010: Alameda

Okay, back to trip photos. So, when we went down to California last month, we decided to stay in Alameda for the first half of our trip, which is a mere 20 minutes away from San Francisco. Mostly because we have friends who live there and with whom we wanted to spend some time, but also because it’s a heck of a lot less expensive than hanging out in the big city. We got a giant suite with a balcony that overlooked a quaint lagoon (filled with ducks and so forth that love to be fed) for waaay less than a cramped little hotel room in San Francisco. Plus, we were renting a car anyhow, so any time we wanted to go in to “see the sights”, we could quite easily.

Alameda is located on a small island (next to Oakland) in the San Francisco Bay. Simply put, it’s gorgeous – Victorian houses, lush greenery, and a small-town atmosphere, filled with independently owned shops instead of “a Starbucks on every corner” (if you’re into that kinda thing ;) ). It’s the kind of place I could imagine myself moving to – if getting a green card and finding a way to make a comparable income were an easy thing to do, that is. For those of you who have never been, here are just a few snippets to entice you.

Lagoon

The view from our hotel room, overlooking the lagoon.

Duck Feeding

Where we spent much time trying to get the ducks to come visit.

Ducks

I wonder if they knew it was for some fine Trader Joe’s bread?

Balcony Fun

Finny did a puppet show for the various waterfowl (here – a goose and a merganser I think), and Max adored watching them.

Rich 'n' Libby

Our friends Rich and Libby and a multi-purpose bug zapper.

Back Yard

Rich and Libby’s gorgeous back yard – including roses and oaks, stone pavers, and one terribly cute chicken coop.

The Menagerie

Just a few of their menagerie – tortoise, chickens, and reef dwellers.

Friends

Rich and Libby’s daughter and our son got along famously.

Natural Foods Marketplace

As I said, many independents – like at the Natural Foods Market.

Tucker's Ice Cream

And Tucker’s Ice Cream, which offered some “super creamed” yums.

More Tucker's Goodness

The “number 1″ place for ice cream, which was evident by the waiting in line (as the kids tree gazed outside). Our boy’s happy face, along with a Polariod wall of many other satisfied young customers.

Alameda Movie Theatre

The Art Deco city landmark Alameda Theatre… so cool!

The Beach

The kids loved the beach – you can see SF in the background.

Webster Street Fair

And once again, we happened upon the Webster Street Fair.

Webster Street Fair

Where we enjoyed the coolest pinball caravan, people watching, yummy street eats, and bargains on artisan merchandise.

Pinball Museum

Pinball caravan? Yup. Alameda has their very own pinball museum!

Pinball Machines

Where you can find machines from through the ages – here: Xenon, Dr. Who, FunHouse, and one cool “mood ring-esque” ball launcher.

Viva Mexico

There are also some yummy eateries – like “Viva Mexico”, where I remember trying taquitos for the very first time. Mmm, taquitos.

Victorian House

And my favourite aspect of all – the Victorian houses.

Little Houses What All Look The Same

Apparently I have a thing for the green-purple combination. ;)

And so, there it is. A small sampling of Alameda, CA. If you’re ever in the neighbourhood, I highly recommend stopping by and hanging out for a while. Thanks, Al, for the wonderful time you showed us.

Cali2010: Waterworld

Okay, back to some trip photos… Not ones to laze around on our vacation <ahem>, we got up bright and early the day after travel day and headed out…to a waterpark! The weather was absolutely gorgeous, it was a weekend so our friends could play, and, well… WE LOVE WATERPARKS! A half-hour drive to Concord, CA brought us to “Northern California’s largest collection of heart-pounding water slides and attractions”, also known as Waterworld. With over 30 slides to choose from (including one with a 6-story funnel drop, known as “The Tornado”), a wave pool and lazy river, and not one but TWO kiddie areas, we couldn’t go wrong. And we didn’t.

Waterworld Entrance

The entrance to Waterworld on a not-so-busy Saturday.

Of course, enjoying ANY attraction with a curious toddler is… um… challenging? So, I am afraid that I, myself, only got to sample a few of the rides and I snapped far fewer photos than if I were visiting the park without my wee one. From what I could tell, however, this park ranked right up there with the best. Way more variety and much larger slides than the indoor World Waterpark at WEM, though nice and compact so you didn’t have to walk great distances to get anywhere. Still a great atmosphere, though not quite as “kitschy” as Typhoon Lagoon at Disney World. And while it had cool rides like “The Tornado” like Wet’n'Wild Water World on the Gold Coast of Australia, it wasn’t quite as intensely over-the-top.

Things I didn’t really like? Well, “security” inspected our bags upon entry and wouldn’t let me bring in any food…until I explained that our baby didn’t eat anything they had to offer because of his reflux, at which point they let me bring in a few snacks for him. I understand that they want to make money and all, but they didn’t offer anything healthy to eat – just your average junky park food. C’mon, people – throw me an apple! Unlike most parks we’ve been to, you had to rent tubes for the lazy river (which we didn’t), and the bathrooms were all the way back at the entrance (rather than near the kiddie areas, like any sane designer would think of). But overall, a small price to pay for a really fun park – and I seriously loved the “multi-people rafting” slides a whole lot, as I could enjoy the waterpark with my eldest screaming along with me having a blast right by my side.

First View of Waterworld

Our first view of the waterpark. The lazy river in the foreground and a slide that carries the tube up for you in the background. Sweet!

The Kids Area

The view on the way over to one of the kiddie areas – lookin’ good.

Baby Spray

Immediately after applying sunscreen, the baby bee-lined to the water. (In fact, he was squirmy the whole time we were applying.)

Wavepool

And the older kids checked out the (lifejackets provided) wavepool.

Snack

We thought we’d fuel up a bit before the mega-sliding began.

Happy Baby

Though, the baby was very insistent on heading back to the water.

Brave Sliders

The brave watersliders heading off to meet their doom adventures.

Chillin'

And me and the baby doing some snacking before splashing. (Plus – a new rashie to replace the one I had forgotten in the hotel room.)

As the day progressed, we alternated between hanging out with the baby, sliding/swimming with our eldest, eating, and resting. One of my favourite parts of the day was when my son schlepped me off to show me all of the cool slides he’d been on. Well, we only got to try a few of them – I never did make it to The Tornado – but that’s okay, I got the idea. It was fun and exhilarating and a great chance for us to spend time together, as the baby takes up so much of it these days.

Snow Cone

Mmm…more snacking with one GIANT snow cone!

Pool Dancing

All sugared-up and pool dancing to some 80s music – yeah!!!

Palapa

The view from the lounge chair under our palapa.

Sleepy Baby

All the excitement wasn’t enough to make someone miss naptime.

Relaxy Daddy

Or maybe all the excitement actually induced naptime…

The Lazy River

Finally, it was time to pack up and head home – past the river…

The Tornado

And past the infamous “Tornado” (that my 6-year-old went on!)

Refill Container

Thank you Waterworld, with your crazy fun slides and ridiculously large drink containers – it was nice to have met you!

Cali2010: Funky Letters

Remember how I’ve been talking about how much I like funky lettering? (If you need reminding, please feel free to go back to this post or even this one). Well, anyhow. During our recent trip down south, I kept the idea of snapping “ransom note like” letters in my head, and I managed to use them to create something I really enjoy. Sadly, it’s not “perfect”, as we were usually on our way somewhere else and I didn’t have the luxury of taking photos in the “ideal” light or from the “best” angle (or even whilst standing still in some cases)…but it’s not bad for a first attempt. And it will make an awesome front page for my scrapbooking of the trip! Recognize any of them?

Funky California Letters

“California” spelled out using various letters found whilst there.

Now, you’ll have to excuse me. We’ve been home for 5 days and I’m just starting to make a dent in the piles of laundry, thanks to a broken-but-now-fixed washing machine. It is amazing just how unsettled I have felt not being able to fully unpack and “reset” things to they way they are “supposed” to be. And so, I must go and nest now. Have a wonderful weekend, y’all!

(Key: Coca-Cola van, Aria Market and Bakery, metal letter from Anthropologie, Tomatina Restaurant, Tucker’s Ice Cream flavours, Holiday Inn, Ralph’s Grocery, Bubba Gump’s Restaurant, Julie’s Coffee and Tea Garden, and Yahoo! billboard)
