Short(stuff) Sheeting

Short(stuff) Sheeting

Sleep is a precious commodity when you have two children with chronic acid reflux. Not just for myself, but for the boys as well. I have endeavoured to make their bedtime experiences as pleasant as possible, in a small attempt to make up for the pain they feel on a regular basis. Not only do I haul my exhausted body out of bed to comfort them when they are having their episodes, but we have a soothing reading-in-bed followed by quiet-music-and-recounting-the-day routine that we follow. I’ve also taken the time to either sew or alter sheet sets with some of their favourite characters on them, so that they look forward to “hanging out” with them when it’s time to go to sleep – kind of like having a “stuffy”, but not.

When Monkeyboy Junior (MBJ) was “two-of-a-half” and moved from his toddler bed into his “big boy bed”, I found some Bob The Builder sheets on eBay for him. One of the side effects of this condition is that the boys spend much of the night flailing around in bed – arching their backs, kicking their legs, rolling around, etc. Keeping a blanket or top sheet on them when they’re little is simply impossible, so to keep them warm in the winter months, I wrap them in big polar fleece housecoats. Luckily, around the time MBJ entered school, he got “better” at sleeping under a blanket, so I made him a couple of duvet covers with either the top sheets or with fabric found at the store.

This one had Bob The Builder on one side, and Thomas The Tank Engine on the other.

This one had Batman on one side, and Cars on the other. I have also made pillowcases for the boys – most recently a new Batman one for my little fan Monkeyboy Junior Jr. (MBJJ) – as seen in the top, right corner (and as you can tell by the lack of fading on it…)

When we updated MBJ’s room, he wanted to have more “grown up” sheets, and we found some cool guitars for his bed. I decided to buy the full sized set, because it came with two pillowcases and a larger top sheet. I then altered the bottom sheet to fit the twin bed, and with the help of an old king sheet from our room, made him another duvet cover with the top sheet.

But MBJ only had the one more “grown up” set, and it was a bit of a pain when laundry day (or the flu) came. So, after checking out what was out there, he decided he wanted to get some Mario Kart sheets. Very grown up. 😉 Naturally, his little brother also wanted Mario sheets, but I wasn’t about to get him his own set… So, I just split-up the one set. I picked up an inexpensive twin set in plain red and used the top sheets to make a duvet cover for MBJ. He can use the red bottom sheet and the cover on his bed, and MBJJ can use the character bottom sheet on his bed. I also split all of the pillow cases so that there are now four of them with characters on one side and plain colour on the other, two for each boy. Everybody is happy.

So, yeah. Just a little something I put together recently on a rainy summer day. Hope you’re having a wonderful summer. =)

  1. I was looking for guitar sheets on google, in specific colors, and the ones you show in this post are exactly the colors I am needing. Can you please tell me where you got them, or what the brand is? Thank you so much!
